Plying 101

Plying can make or break your handspun yarn. Whether you 2 ply or 3 ply, it can change the look of your yarn. Learn several methods for doing basic plying on the spinning wheel in Understanding Plying.

Other techniques covered: when and how to use a center pull ball for plying, and Andean bracelet plying technique (which is perfect for use with small samples skeins) when you are spinning on your wheel.

Participants need to purchase or bring the following supplies when they come to class:

(Please arrive a few minutes early to purchase your materials.

  • Spinning wheel in good working condition

    • (If you don’t have your own wheel, you can reserve one of ours to use for the class.)

  • 1 empty bobbin

  • Scissors

Participants should prepare the following ahead of time to get the most from the class:

  • 3-7 bobbins or balls/cakes of pre-spun wool single ply yarn

    • (Bring singles that you are okay using for practice—the more the better as you will be sampling several different techniques.)

Optional items participants should bring to class if you have them:
